Finishing the Semester

The next two weeks we will review what we have learned. The first week of December we will review the last few weeks of class for a test this Friday (Dec. 5). A study guide will be provided.

The following week (Dec. 7th-12th) will be a semester review for the exam the following week.
         The semester exam is comprehensive but have no worries. I will let the students know exactly what's on the exam. The students will use old tests for review.

2nd Nine Weeks

In week one of the second nine weeks the students learned about the Doctrine of Creation. We read through the Genesis account of creation and discussed it as a class.
My goal the first week was to teach the following concepts:
1. God created everything out of nothing
2. God created man and woman with great care and in HIs image
3. That the earth is young and the theory of evolution is incompatible with the Bible
4. God created all things for His glory

In week two of the second nine weeks the students learned about the Patriarchs and the formation of Israel in the Old Testament
My goal the second nine weeks was to teach the following:
1. Israel began with the calling of Abram in Genesis 12
2. God made a covenant with Abram to make his descendants into a great nation
3. Abraham had Isaac and Isaac had Jacob who had 12 sons who later became the 12 tribes of Israel

End of the 1st Nine Weeks

The first nine weeks went by fast. I enjoyed teaching your 8th grader. Next nine weeks we will look at major themes in the Bible. The syllabus has the schedule.  Next week we will focus on Creation.

                                                          Wrapping up the Nine Weeks

We have three tasks this week...

1. Students will present their project to the class. Each student has three minutes to present their project. This presentation counts as their semester exam grade.

2. I am sending home a reading form today. Students are to place in the margin what percentage of the book they read. There is also a margin for a parent's signature vouching for their child's honesty. What they place in the margin will count as a test grade. These forms are due by Friday.

3. Students will turn in their notebook. If your child was absent a day feel free to ask another student for those missed notes. However, please do not copy notes from another student's notebook if your student decided not to take notes. I reminded them every day that their notes counted as a test grade.

Thank you for allowing me to teach your child the Bible this nine weeks.

So far the students have learned:
Bible...
-Who wrote the Bible
-What the criteria was for New Testament inclusion
-Inspiration, innerancy, sufficiency of Scripture
-How the Bible was passed down through the years
-Various translators, i.e. Tyndale, Wycliffe, Luther
-Various English Bibles, i.e. KJV, Geneva Bible, Wycliffe Bible, Tyndale Bible
-Other "holy books," i.e. Quran, Apocrypha, Torah, etc.
God...
-Trinity, i.e. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Three in One

Now, we turn to the question, "What does it mean to be a Christian?"
This week we are looking at concepts such as: faith, grace, mercy, works, etc.

We will continue with this question this week and next week. Then, we will review for the test during the last week of the nine weeks.

The Syllabus maps out where we will be going next nine weeks. Your son/daughter should have a copy.

Remind your son/daughter to read their book, finish their project, and copy their class notes daily. These three are test grades.

SEPTEMBER 16 2014

8^TH GRADE BIBLE RESEARCH PROJECT

Instructions:

 Choose one person or topic to research. After choosing the person or topic, research all you can. Purchase a half sized poster board (You can buy a large one and cut it in half). Paste pictures on the poster board with typed information below the picture describing what is shown. Be as creative as you can be. Make it look good with many pictures. Students will present their poster board to the class for a 3 minute presentation. On the back of the poster students are to summarize all of their research. The summary must be at least a one page double spaced typed in Time New Roman font glued to the back of the poster.  Student may use their notes. Students may use on-line information (Do not use Wikipedia). Students may use their school library. Also, list all of the sources you use for your research on the back of your poster. (notes, website, author of article or book, book title)

This project is due OCTOBER 8^TH

Parents,

    I am enjoying teaching your student. Class has been fun! However, my behavioral policy has been too lenient. I have been giving two warnings per day to each students before giving a detention on the third warning. Many students will rack up two warnings each day before settling down and paying attention. Therefore, I have informed the students that two warnings will be given out to each student who misbehaves per week before giving a detention on the third warning. I will send an email to parents informing them their student has two warnings. By letting you the parent know, we can avoid detentions. Principal Baggett supports this change in my policy. Please remind your student to pay attention and not to talk when asked to listen. I am looking forward to a great year!

Greetings!

    I am your child's Bible teacher. My name is Jared Buchanan. My wife Kayla teaches 4th grade at PLAS. We live in Goshen where I pastor Goshen Baptist Church. We are celebrating two years there. In 2010, I graduated from the Baptist College of Florida  with my bachelors and am currently completing a MA in Christian Studies at the BCF.

When deciding how to teach this year I kept one simple concept in mind, "What do I wish I had known about the Bible when I was there age?" As a result, everything we cover this year is designed to help them navigate our culture. I truly want the students to know what they believe and why they believe it. My goal is to challenge, provoke, and lead them to consider what the Bible says about life.

This nine weeks the students are learning about how the Bible was written, who wrote it, and how it was  passed down through the years. We considered questiond like, "Can we trust the Bible, is it outdated, and is it relevant today?"

Here is what they are expected to do

1. Every Friday we have a quiz covering the week's lecture notes (except on Test week)
Students who miss class must find the notes by asking a classmate or me for a copy.

2. Two tests will be administered each nine weeks with an exam at the end of the semester.

3. A project over their chosen topic is due October 8th.
 They should all have a copy of what I expect.

4. There notebook with their class notes will be turned in at the end of the nine weeks for a test grade (completion).

5. Assigned reading
 Each student is to complete the assigned reading by the end of the nine weeks for a test grade.

6. Daily classwork is assigned and graded at the end of the week (completion).
